'I told myself my voice wasn’t good enough to share with the public, and that even if it was, I was too different-looking for the music industry to take any interest in me.' –Kechi shares her story for AntiBullyingWeek
This is what I did with music. Singing is so precious to me, the one thing that brings me pure, unexplainable joy, but as much as I love to sing for fun, I never considered pursuing the art professionally. I had "realistic" reasons too. I told myself my voice wasn’t good enough to share with the public, and that even if it was, I was too different-looking for the music industry to take any interest in me.
The truth was, though, that I was afraid the world would confirm what I secretly believed about my voice — that it was just average. Honestly, it was very difficult to admit to such an insecurity, especially because I wasn’t fully aware I had one. I love the fact that I am truly at peace with my, but I was forced to realize that I was so focused on loving my body with no pretense whatsoever, that I neglected to extend that love to other aspects of my life that were arguably just as important. Because of self-bullying, I allowed myself to believe lies about me.
What happened to my sister and I is not unique. There are countless others, people of all ages, who are being bullied all over the world. All I want to do is lend a hand in the move to reduce that number, one person at a time, by using my story and my voice as tools to empower the victims however possible.
