“I’ve always said, as a nurse of 43 years, that I trust the nurses’ voice' The head of the Royal College of Nursing has defended her U-turn over a double-digit pay demand for nurses 🔴 patcullen9 speaks to PMGallagher1
The head of the Royal College of Nursing has defended her U-turn over a double-digit pay demand for nurses and vowed she would only quit “when the job is done”., chief executive and general secretary of the RCN, said she was not disappointed that nurses had rejected the Government’s improved pay offer – by 54 per cent to 46 per cent, despite recommending it to her 300,000 union members in England.
“Waiting lists are creeping up every single day, 7.3 million now in England. If we’re going to get those patients off waiting lists we need to address the workforce crisis and be able to keep every single nurse in the workforce we’ve got and retain those people and bring new people in.” “Part of that offer was the Government agreeing, for the first time, to put a safe nurse staffing framework in place in England, which we have fought for. That was found very attractive by our nursing staff,” she said. “So we felt there were elements of that package that our nursing staff should seriously consider. That’s the reason myself and our ruling council, any many frontline nurses make up that council, decided to recommend.
Downing Street said some nurses, those at the bottom or middle of band five under Agenda for Change contracts, would already receive double-digit pay rises under the deal rejected by RCN members. However, Ms Cullen maintained that the new deal was not enough after years of real-terms pay cuts, and laid out why she wanted a new pay structure for nurses.
