In an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, Mr Yousaf indicated that he would be happy to ask SNP members to finance any future referendum campaign again. Asked if people could trust the party with their money, he replied: “They can, and should. I have made it clear from the first day that I came in to this position that we will have a governance and transparency review.
“Although we will of course look for donations and so on and so forth as other political parties do, we will rely on our grassroots membership to raise those funds for a future independence referendum and I’ve no doubt that our members will dig deep.”a slight rise on the 72,186 who were eligible to vote in the leadership electionMr Yousaf also said the party’s new auditors were “confident” they could file its Westminster group’s accounts on time despite the looming deadline.
If this is not done by 31 May, the SNP’s Westminster group could miss out on £1.2m of “short money” – public funds given to opposition parties to support their parliamentary work.
