Steve Borthwick has selected Farrell and Smith as his fly-half options for England's game against France on Saturday with Ford returning to Sale
“We have no doubt that if he was to stay, he’d be great for us,” Kevin Sinfield, the England defence coach, said of Ford. “But we think at this moment in time the best thing for him is to get minutes at Sale.”
“It looked like he enjoyed himself didn’t it? So it’s only good for us,” said Farrell. But what about Borthwick’s statement that England’s attack needed plenty of rebuilding? Had Smith missed anything by being absent for the three-day camp in Brighton last week? “Not too much, I don’t think, individually,” said Farrell.
Farrell has dropped well below his career average of close to 80 per cent by missing eight of his 15 shots at the posts in this year’s three Six Nations matches. And while Sinfield and England’s attack coach Nick Evans are both kicking coaches who had fine careers with the tee, the skipper is continuing to tap into the past master, Jonny Wilkinson, who lives locally to the England team’s Surrey hotel.
Farrell said of his kicking: “I obviously know how to kick; half of it is overthinking. I’ve hit somewhere I’ve missed but have been happy with how I’ve hit them. I’ve hit somewhere I’ve been off. It’s a whole view of it so that you don’t overly pick at little things, which is probably what I’ve been doing.”Sinfield was asked if Farrell’s captaincy status and strong character ensured his selection, not least due to vice-captain Courtney Lawes having to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.
