‘I have to start that job’: Council pay factor Ana Sandoval’s early exit from dais
She could no longer afford to pay for in-home child care for her infant daughter — born last summer in the midst of her third term — on her City Council salary of just under $46,000. So Sandoval swapped her job representing District 7 residents for a higher-paying position with the Bexar County-owned University Health.
It’s up in the air how soon voters could be asked to OK another pay increase for City Council. Texas cities can only change their charters every two years. If the charter amendment on the May 6 ballot, Supporters of the 2015 charter change believed the salary would encourage more minority candidates to run and increase the number of candidates with a wealth of professional and life experience seeking local elected office. It was also intended to more fairly compensate council members for what was increasingly seen as a full-time jobFirst-term District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, 27, said the salary made it possible to run for the East Side seat in 2021.
Council members Manny Peláez, Melissa Cabello Havrda and Adriana Rocha Garcia also hold jobs outside council. Peláez and Cabello Havrda are attorneys, and Rocha Garcia is a professor at Our Lady of the Lake University.
