Ghouls? The undead? Campy zombie horror? No, thanks. Jarmusch's dystopian Weltanschauung? Yes, please.

for more of a crowd-pleasing quick hit): It’s discursive and languidly paced, with plenty of space built into it to think, to breathe, to speculate and ruminate. In short, it’s low-key everything: Low-key funny , low-key smart , low-key cool, and low-key creepy .

The plot is as simple as it is absurd: The citizens of the bucolic-seeming hamlet of Centerville, population 738, suddenly notice their environment going off-kilter in strange and almost incomprehensible ways: The sun’s not setting, for one; pets are acting strangely; cell phones and television and radio signals go dark. Bring on an onslaught of flesh-eating zombies crawling out of their graves in the local cemetery and intent on devouring everyone in sight, and you pretty much have it.

The cast consists of both Jarmusch standbys and others, like Gomez, making their Jarmuschian debut . Murray’s Cliff Robertson is the local police chief supposedly in charge of defending the town against the zombies, with “help” from Driver’s Ronnie Peterson and Sevigny’s Mindy Morrison, his deputies.

It’s Swinton, though—the Scottish mortician at the Ever After Funeral Home in Centerville—who provides the movie’s best one-liners , along with much of its moxie. In the end the film is funny, yes—but as with most Jarmusch films, there’s an undercurrent of melancholy that runs through it as well. By highlighting the quotidian fixations of the zombies—or the hapless citizens they’re targeting—to an absurd degree, he shines a light on our own obsessions and the absurd times in which we live.
