Feeling disillusioned, I reasoned that IVF must be the answer – it had worked first time last time after all. So we used some of our savings to pay for not one but two rounds of IVF. When neither worked we were forced to start to accept that perhaps a second child wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t easy.Having experienced infertility I felt that it was helpful to others to share my experience, to provide hope.
Keen to understand the science behind it I contacted Dr Annette Thwaites, lead author of the scientific review, from University College London, who told me there are many theories about why this might happen: “Firstly, IVF associated changes – it is biologically plausible that ovarian stimulation from IVF cycles may improve ovarian function in a similar mechanism to the surgical technique ovarian drilling – secondly, pregnancy induced hormonal changes, such as endometriosis regression, or...
However, she had no concrete conclusion, telling me: “We just don’t know – which means that there are plenty of exciting opportunities for further research.”
