Diana Kanter, 71 and from Surrey, told i she wanted a new passport after Brexit to beat queues at the airport - and to feel European again

Rowena Coldrick, who was born and raised in Stockport, near Manchester, arrived in Brussels in October 1980 to work as a freelance interpreter.

“Peter was very nervous that if Britain got awkward in the negotiations, Belgium might get awkward too, but it worked out,” Mrs Coldrick says. “So, about the age of 66, I became Belgian. And I’m very pleased. We always brought our children up to believe that they were Europeans.” “I then moved to resuscitate my Irish grandfather,” he says. “Even though I’ve spent very little time in Ireland, I have a lot of sympathy and admiration for it in terms of its history and difficult relations with the UK.”

He had to find his grandfather’s birth certificate from a Dublin suburb; his marriage certificate, from Canada; and his death certificate, which revealed he had died about 10 minutes’ walk away from Richmond, where Mr Harley now spends much of his time. “I felt I wasn’t European any longer,” says Mr Mossop, who married an Italian last year. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. Maybe I wasn’t going to have the same rights as an EU citizen. Maybe there would be some form of double taxation or residency requirement. So, I thought I need to future-proof myself.”
