Pentagon is unsure how many Americans are still in Afghanistan

The U.S. military has evacuated 7,000 people from Kabul since the Taliban began taking back control of Afghanistan, a military spokesperson said Thursday during a briefing, but specifics on how many more evacuations are needed remain scarce.... [+]The U.S. military has helped evacuate 7,000 people since Aug. 14, said Army Maj. Gen. William D. “Hank” Taylor.

About 2,000 of whom were airlifted in the last 24 hours, said Taylor, deputy director for regional operations and force management for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Asked how many Americans are still in Afghanistan, Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said, “I don’t know.” Kirby said the State Department would be more likely to know but that it’s tough to know how many Americans are in any foreign country, since they do not have to register with U.S. officials.This is a developing story.
