“I can’t imagine returning to the city because of all the pain and suffering I associate with it. ... I have this feeling inside of me that Mariupol was wiped out. There is nothing they could do to bring it back to me.”

One of the last photos Dmytro took from the siege of Azovstal, on May 16th 2022. The plant was surrendered to Russia less than a week later.Neither Dmytro nor Katya can picture what the future looks like for Mariupol. Russia has used their efforts to rebuild the city for positive press, with President Vladimir Putin visiting a new apartment building as an example back in March.

Satellite imagery indicates that the neighborhood next to it, which was severely damaged in the fighting, has been almost completely demolished in preparation for development. “The shelling continued every day, every night. And every night we thought maybe we would die, maybe we wouldn’t survive because we were also without food, and without water,” she says. On March 17, her father decided they couldn’t wait any longer and they started the dangerous drive out of the city.
