“It’s gene therapy that will be able to reverse ageing in the whole population,” he says. He notes there have been more than 50 experiments in mammals in which gene therapy has been shown to reverse aspects of the ageing process.

Before interest grew in epigenetics, it had been assumed ageing was principally due to the gradual accumulation of mistakes – mutations – in our genes. But in January, a, by Professor David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School, provided evidence that, more specifically, it is the disruption of epigenetic instructions that causes the loss of healthy tissue and age-linked organ deterioration.

There is already plenty of evidence to show that epigenetic patterns are influenced by factors such as diet, obesity, physical activity, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, environmental pollutants, and psychological stress – the kind of lifestyle factors that Bryan Johnson and his medical team are trying to micromanage.

“If people want to fly to Mars and live for ever, let them try. But let’s keep things safe and realistic for everyone else,” he says.
