Hyundai's new Sonata design has recaptured the magic of the path-breaking 2010 Sonata, but will carbuyers care?
The fairy dust is back at Hyundai Motor’s design center in Namyang, South Korea.
Two years ago at the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai worked to rectify the mistake with a mid-cycle refresh, meant to give Sonata a more aggressive front end. It did, but designers appeared to have stopped at the B-pillar and left the car with the YF rear end largely intact. The result was a vehicle with a half-new/half-old feel.
The driving force behind the look of the new Sonata was Hyundai head of styling, Sang Yup Lee. The exterior of the car was crafted at Namyang and the interior by Chris Chapman’s team at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. I found this comment by Hyun interesting: “It is not easy to change the modern-day vehicle dimension by even 10mm, so this is an indication of the expectation of Hyundai with the new Sonata,” he said. “They are feeling the heat, and this is a do-or-die product.”
