Hyundai is trying to take some of the sting of losing EV tax credits for its customers with complimentary home chargers and installation credit
The transition from the old federal EV tax credit program to the Inflation Reduction Act program earlier this year hit some automakers more than others. The IRA tax credits are limited to vehicles assembled in North America with at least 40% of the battery content coming from North America or US free trade partners. Among those impacted is Hyundai Motor Group which currently builds most of its EVs in South Korea except for the Genesis GV70 Electrified.
Customers that purchase the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 or Kona Electric by October 31, will get a free Chargepoint Home Flex level 2 charger and $600 toward installation. The Home Flex Charger will deliver up to 9.6 kW when used with a 240V outlet or 12 kW with a hardwired installation. It includes a smartphone app to manage charging at home and also access public Chargepoint sessions.
Even though Hyundai’s Ioniq EVs charge exceptionally fast on 350-kW DC fast chargers , charging at home is still the most economical if its available. Once any complimentary fast charging sessions that come with the purchase are used up, DC fast charging can be quite pricey and unless drivers are taking a long trip away from home, should generally be avoided.
Using the Hyundai Home Marketplace, owners can locate an electrician and arrange for installation if they don’t already have a 240V outlet in their garage. The marketplace will direct owners to Electrum Energy Advisors for an assessment and to schedule the installation.Hyundai
