‘Hustlers’ scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a movie starring women of color
had Hollywood not gotten caught up in global franchise tentpole fever. We can hope the industry picks up where it left off in 1999. For example,opened with $16 million in 1997, and that PG-13 snake thriller starred Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube “just because.” Today, Dev Patel stars in“just because” and nobody shows up.
Variables aside, we have to show up. We can’t complain about ghastly representation figures for Hispanic talent and then ignorebecause they are merely three-star entertainments. That’s partially what makesmovie. It was not sold as a watershed moment for an underrepresented demographic, partially because almost all of them are represented in Lorene Scafaria’s true-story crime dramedy. And, yet, we voted with our wallet.
