Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) shared his takeaways from this week's Congressional hearing with IRS whistleblowers.
Khanna is a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and was able to personally direct questions to IRS agents Gary Shapley and Joe Ziegler.During a television interview on Saturday with MSNBC, Khanna shared his opinion that Shapley's testimony in particular proved that President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, did not receive special treatment.
Shapley and Khanna had some back and forth regarding the agent's recommendation to the rest of his team at the IRS criminal tax division that the president's son be charged with harsher crimes than he ultimately pleaded out to. Shapley admitted the vast majority of his recommendations go ignored, and said he doesn't respect those decisions.
"This is a pattern, this is often the case, that agents tend to be more aggressive than when it comes to the actual judicial process of law enforcement, that there is a disagreement," Khanna said."And, so what this showed, clearly, is that there was no special treatment with Hunter Biden, and that [Shapley] is someone who has a more zealous view of prosecution in cases that have nothing to do with Hunter Biden.
As the hearing progressed, Zeigler told members of the committee that he agreed with Shapley's statements, and claimed that he believed"felony charges were well-supported." Biden submitted a guilty plea to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay income taxes and agreed to a diversion program to have his gun charge dismissed.
Khanna also chairs the Reform Environmental Subcommittee, and has served on the Oversight Committee since 2019.
