Mr Halford said the Ombudsman – incorrectly, he believes – failed to find that the women suffered direct financial loss or lost opportunities because of the maladministration.
Waspi and its legal team hope this could mean higher compensation, although it is by no means guaranteed. “[Before his death, my husband] kept saying, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be fine because you’ll get your pension when you’re 60.’“Then I had this blow that no there was no pension, I wouldn’t get it for six years.” The 67-year-old is now living on the Isle of Wight. “I was absolutely frightened, I was petrified.
“The last year before I got my pension, my savings ran out, so I had to go onto universal credit. It was £400 a month and it was absolutely awful. I couldn’t believe that I had got to this stage where I didn’t have any income at all. I was frightened, it was horrible,” she says.
