Hundreds of transgender rights allies turn out to protest Matt Walsh's 'What is a Woman?' speech at UH
The activists rushed to the barrier, chanting and booing at the exiting audience. For hours, they had loudly voiced their dislike of the speaker and his views: Walsh is known for his opinions on transgender issues, including his campaigns against hospitals providing gender-affirming health care for transgender youth.
“When we bring events to campus, we look for ideas that are engaging, informing, relevant,” said Mikel Moore, chairman of the UH chapter. “Walsh’s movie, it’s relevant."Police estimate that 435 people watched the film and speech, and around 400 people formed the combined protest and counter-protest, with the transgender rights side making up the largest portion.
The crowd was rapt during Walsh's speech, and he incited laughter and applause. He offered his known views on gender identity, sometimes disparaging LGBTQ activists. He drew the biggest response from the audience when he pointed at"colorful" displays of the LGBTQ community as proof that he is allowed to have an opinion on gender ideology.
UH officials said in a statement that Walsh was invited to campus by a registered student organization, and he was allowed to speak based on the school's Freedom of Expression Policy.
