Fifty school children were among the passengers left with no onward journey at Preston
Rail passengers were sent on a near 200 mile taxi ride when a London-Glasgow journey suddenly terminated in Preston.
Instead they were forced to arrange their own travel and after 11pm, around five hours after the trains stopped, they stepped aboard a coach organised by the school itself. Writing on X - formerly Twitter - the school said: "Hi @AvantiWestCoast we've been stuck at Preston since around 630pm with 50 12 year olds. It's now 10.08pm.
But the Glasgow-bound train was full so left Preston as Nokise and his fellow passengers arrived. They were told to wait for the next train, which ended up being cancelled. At 10.30pm he was in the final group of travellers to get in a cab, describing the situation as “ridiculous”. The A72 is “a real motion-sickness nightmare of a road” which is “narrow, dark, full of turns and occasionally just dips,” he wrote.
According to Avanti West Coast, the disruption began after a driver of an Avanti West Coast Service reported a track defect at Lockerbie just after 4pm. Network Rail engineers were called to the scene and the line was closed for a few hours while the issue was fixed, causing a severe impact on services.
