Most of the workers are minorities: Black, Latinx and Asian Pacific Islander. “Everybody’s having a very difficult time with Covid-19, but the reality is that it has impacted communities of color far more harshly,” Huerta said. “Everyone is out of work,” said Maddox, airport industry vice president of United Service Workers West. “United is taking over our work and kicking us out the door. We are essential workers too. We keep the airport running.”
“Many of my co-workers have health issues and need their healthcare,” he said. “The way the airline industry is treating us is very inhumane.”
