An estimated 1,000 people participated in the Sunday parade, officials said. Most were part of troupes organized by local churches, with others aligned with cultural groups. The event often blends, celebrating the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a peasant in present-day Mexico City. It’s a far cry from 52 years ago when Mercedes Juarez came to Houston and only two churches in the city held masses in Spanish. She recalled taking two buses just to get from The Galleria area to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on Navigation for services. It was there celebrants started marching from the east side church to the downtown cathedral, led by, among others, Juarez and her husband, Daniel.
