The study shows that humans have moved out of Africa multiple times, and the exchange of genes between Neanderthals and humans happened in both directions, not just one way.
The research was led by the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with Addis Ababa University, the University of Botswana, Fudan University, Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, and the University of Yaoundé. The team reached this conclusion by comparing a Neanderthal genome with a varied collection of genomes from contemporary indigenous populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
The team analyzed a dataset containing comprehensive whole-genome sequences from 180 people belonging to 12 varied sub-Saharan African populations.
