Federal officials approved the start of engineering work on the $16 billion Gateway Hudson River Rail Tunnels.
The Gateway Project to build two new Hudson River rail tunnels and rehabilitate the old ones took a major step forward Thursday that puts the bi-state project on a path to ultimately receive a $6.88 billion federal grant, officials said.engineering phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants
program announced by federal transportation officials in March. This announcement is the next step in the process. The local share of the project is 50%, which is being split between New Jersey and New York. Amtrak also is providing funding, Obtaining federal Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing loans to support the project will help the states finance the local share.
The decision was praised by U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez, both D-NJ, who, along with the congressional delegations of New Jersey and New York, fought to keep the project funded and progressing when it was downgraded and opposed by the Trump administration. “Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone in the construction of the Hudson River Tunnel project,” Booker said. “Entering the engineering phase puts this project on track to receive the substantial federal investments that will ensure the long-term reliability and resilience of the Northeast Corridor.”
