Santana was backed by the influential Hudson County Democratic Organization, while Ferreira, a Republican, failed in his second bid for mayor.
Carol Jean Doyle, the longtime councilwoman who ran independently after the appointed mayor was given the Democratic party line, has defeated two rivals to become the first woman mayor in Kearny’s long history.
All the votes were not published by 10:30 p.m., but Doyle had 1,720 votes, Ferreira 1,439 and Santana 1,412. Results in this election and all elections in Hudson County are not official until certified by the Hudson County Clerk. Hudson County has two new senators-elect, Raj Mukherji in the 32nd District and Angela McKnight in the 31st District, both HCDO veterans who left their seats in the assembly.
The winners were all backed by the HCDO and they ran against Republicans who did little campaigning, if any. In the 31st , Mary Jane Desmond Noemi Velazquez ran as independents.
