In “The 30-Minute Gardener,” author Greg Loades writes about why defying conventional advice in the garden can help plants thrive.
In “The 30-Minute Gardener” , Greg Loades has succeeded in rendering in words the rapturous joy of gardening. At the outset, he makes a comment that passionate gardeners everywhere will heartily endorse: “I still get excited when seeds start to sprout. That moment when the compost bulges and you catch a glimpse of a stem starting to unfurl is both a story with a happy ending and the thrill of a new beginning. You have sown a seed that germinated. New life has begun.
Loades believes that our attitude towards what we grow can make a difference as to whether our plants succeed or not. “Gardening has its pitfalls,” he writes, “but regularly engaging with your growing space by spending a little time in it each day will shift the focus from expecting a plant to die to expecting it to grow. … And as the garden feels like a place you belong in, so the interest in what makes each plant grow gets stronger.
What Loades has to say about defying conventional advice in the garden is worthy of note. “If a planting guide says that a plant requires full sun and you only have sun for half a day, why not give it a go? Being a rebellious gardener is all part of the learning process.”
