How will this week's cold compare to the 2021 freeze? Houston weather expert Matt Lanza on what to expect
editor Matt Lanza weighed in on how the two weather events might compare — and what residents should know about the upcoming temperature drop. Lanza participated in a question and answer session Tuesday; his responses have not been edited. It's not incredibly abnormal. We've had morning lows in the teens in recent years. I think as recently as — besides 2021 which was abnormal — a few years ago, some places got into the teens within the city.
Yes. It looks like the coldest temperatures will not be as cold as 2021. They’ll still be very cold, but probably at least 3 to 6 degrees milder than what 2021 bottomed out at. And we will probably spend a little less time below freezing than we did in 2021. There will be no snow, no ice — so there's definitely a number of differences between this one and 2021.We didn’t have a ton of winds in February of 2021, but with this, there's no doubt about it.
We get fronts like this from time to time, with strong winds. There's always going to be potential for power outages and trees down and things like that, but this one might be a little bit worse than the average one we see in the winter. But in terms of anything serious and widespread, I don't see that happening. It's just a different kind of cold than 2021.The honest answer, yeah, I wouldn't want to be going out in this.
The best-case scenario is probably that we end up in the low 20s because there's too much wind. Maybe not quite as cold as was anticipated. We still get a hard freeze, but maybe it's just an issue for plants more so than pipes, which would be good news from a property damage standpoint. The worst-case scenario is that we get a little bit more cold than what was expected, we end up down near 15 degrees in the city and then you’ve got more potential issues with pipes that are exposed, or even not exposed. I obviously don't want to say a whole lot about power outages because that's not really predictable. The only thing I would say is that this is the type of cold weather event that the grid should be able to manage and handle.
