How should the city evolve next? Here’s where the candidates stand.

Walnut Creek does not have the same political energy it did two years ago, when anti-police protests and the pandemic fueled a crowded city council race.

Approaching these “diverse issues” came as an adjustment for Francois, a land-use attorney and former city planning commissioner who is more vocal about his opinions on housing policy than social issues. “Quick-fix solutions usually represent a lack of understanding of the details or the complexity of the issues,” Silva said when asked about how the council can incentivize Bay Area businesses to send workers to the city’s available office spaces.

As a child growing up in Orinda, Patch remembers spending many afternoons with friends in downtown Walnut Creek watching movies, browsing the former Barnes and Noble and snacking at California Pizza Kitchen. Those are diversions typical of life in a developed suburban town. When a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020 met a forceful response by Walnut Creek police, Patch remained at home out of concern for her parents, who are high-risk for COVID-19.
