7 magnitude earthquake hits Iskenderun district of Hatay Turkiye on February 06, 2023. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake jolted southern province of Kahramanmaras of Turkiye early Monday, according to Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkiye . It was followed by a magnitude 6.4 quake that struck southeastern Gaziantep province. A third earthquake with a 6.5 magnitude also hit Gaziantep.
Erol Yayoboke, director and senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank, told Yahoo News that Turkey is an earthquake-prone place. Many buildings in that country, he said, were not built to withstand such a powerful quake.
