Cancer waiting times have made for bleak reading in recent months with thousands of people still facing agonising waits to confirm a diagnosis or start treatment.for urgent referrals, the fact that only one of nine cancer waiting times targets is currently being met lays bare a system that simply cannot cope, according to leading charities.
“That’s why we launched a campaign with the NHS to reach those men who hadn’t come forward and share our 30-second risk checker to help them understand their risk and what they can do about it,” said Amy Rylance, head of improving care at Prostate Cancer UK. Dr Lisa Wilde, director of research and external affairs at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “We also know that 56 per cent of patients referred urgently for suspected bowel cancer are not receiving a confirmed cancer diagnosis or rule out of cancer within the 28-day target. This is concerning as it is a really anxious time for patients.
Offering a home test to more people is one important way to improve bowel cancer screening, and meet the Government’s ambition to diagnose more people at an early stage, Dr Wilde said. The NHS in England is also gradually reducing the age for routine screening to include people from 50-59 over the next four years, with this having been recently expanded to 56 and 58 year olds.
