Garrard, the official crown jeweler from 1843 until 2007, shares a few tips on how to make sure your family jewels will last for generations to come.
Few people know more about caring for precious gems and jewels than those in charge of the British royal family’s vast collection. Garrard, the official crown jeweler from 1843 until 2007, undertook that daunting task for generations and learned a thing or two in the process. While royal pieces have the benefit of a dedicated workshop inside of Buckingham Palace where they can be repaired and cleaned, most average jewelry owners have to make do with what they can find around the house.
For sturdy jewelry made from hard metals and gems, cleaning them at home is quite simple: Prentice recommends placing items in a plastic bowl with cleaning solution and gently brushing away any dirt with a soft toothbrush. However, more fragile or porous jewels like pearls, opals, and emeralds could be damaged by the abrasive properties in ammonia. If ever in doubt, bring your pieces to a specialist.
