TheWalkingDead executive producer Greg Nicotero explains how the planned Rick Grimes movie trilogy evolved into Rick and Michonne's spinoff show: 'I don’t think anybody really thought it was gonna happen.'
The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero explains how the franchise's planned trilogy of films centered on Rick Grimes evolved into next year's Rick and Michonne spinoff series. Following Rick's capture by the CRM in season 9, episode 5, AMC announced the former protagonist of The Walking Dead would return in a trilogy of films explaining his absence during a six-year time jump in the main series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Appearing as a guest on Den of Geek's Talking Strange podcast, Nicotero explains the thought process behind turning The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes movie trilogy into a spinoff TV show. He stats that, while scripts for the first movie had been written, production for the films simply didn't work out. Check out what Nicotero has to say below:
Several iterations of the [movie] script flew around and it just ended up not coming to fruition. The idea of doing a Rick Grimes show popped up a year and a half ago probably. I don’t think anybody really thought it was gonna happen. Lo’ and behold, as we get closer we start realizing, ‘Look, if we’re not going to do the movies then maybe there’s a show there.
A spinoff TV series instead of films also works well for Michonne's involvement, especially as she is searching for Rick. Instead of having audiences wait to see Michonne until the second or third movie in Rick Grimes' trilogy, a television show format can show Michonne searching for Rick while also cutting away to learning what Rick was doing in the CRM.
The Walking Dead spinoff will also be able to spend more time following both Rick and Michonne, as the initial 6-episode season could be a season 1 for the new show. Because of the possibility of a season 2 or 3 for Rick and Michonne's spinoff, the series will be able to explore more regarding Rick's capture, Michonne's journey, and the pair's inevitable reunion than a trilogy of films could.
