Ohio State can still recruit whoever it wants. But Michigan has gone from a non-factor to a real threat willing to battle its rival. “We have this saying that the best players in Ohio go to Michigan.” Our experts discuss the shift in the landscape.

have a combined five commitments from Ohio in the 2024 class. That approach, however, won’t work for everyone.

There are a couple of possible solutions for Cincinnati and others that tend to lean on Ohio. One is the transfer portal, which is trending toward schools signing a few fewer high school players in each class. Another has been available all along, but will require extra effort. “It’s really the Mount Union types who are going to get hurt, because there will be less opportunities to grab that Division-I-caliber, small-school prospect who went to Mount because no one else found him,” Bartholomew said. “Now Indiana or Purdue will have to come in and find him.”

Perception is king, but it’s also volatile. Prior to the canceled matchup in 2020, Ohio State had won eight in a row and 15 of the last 16 against the Wolverines. It was a rivalry in name only. Then Michigan strung together a couple of strong seasons and started throwing its weight around in Ohio again. Suddenly the heat gets cranked up on the Buckeyes. It’s why the whims of a few 17-year-olds can whip hundreds of thousands of fans into a frenzy.
