Matthew Phillips knows he’s small. That hasn’t kept him from finding success in pro hockey.
There are two photos of Matthew Phillips on the wall at the Victoria Royals’ gym. Phillips, now 25 and in his first season with the Washington Capitals, had 136 goals and 281 points over 215 regular season games during his junior hockey career with the Western Hockey League squad in British Columbia, but the photos aren’t of him scoring or showing off his skill.
Both photos show the forward, generously listed by Washington as 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, blocking a shot in the dying seconds of a playoff game. The first one, from the first round of the 2017 WHL playoffs, was the moment that Victoria Coach Dan Price, who was in his first season with the team, grasped the extent of Phillips’s competitive nature.
“He took it right in the neck, and then he and the puck slid out ,” Price said. “The image on our wall is him prone on the ice, the puck bouncing off of him out of the zone, and all the Royals players behind him looking up at the clock as time expires. It’s just that courageousness to do anything to win.”Always one of the smallest players on the ice, Phillips has to be competitive and courageous just to stay in the game.
Mitch Love, who was Calgary’s AHL coach for the previous two seasons before joining the Capitals as an assistant in June, had a front-row seat during Phillips’s development into a star in the AHL. Shortly after Love was hired, Phillips joined Washington as a free agent.praised Love for his ability to let the rest of Washington’s staff form opinions on Phillips, but having him as an advocate didn’t hurt Phillips’s chances with his new organization.“His hockey IQ is extremely high,” Love said.
