The first-ever Bumble Bizz First Movers Summit gathered industry dynamos, upcoming local entrepreneurs and women-led startups. Serena Williams, Bumble’s newest Global Advisor, shares her thoughts:
In the past year, Georgia has seen tremendous growth in women-owned businesses and was ranked second in the nation in 2019 by American Express’ “The State of Women-Owned Businesses Report” making Atlanta the perfect location for this Summit.
Aside from being a Global Advisor to the company, Williams has also teamed up with Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd as an investor and active member of the Bumble Fund, which serves as a direct parallel to her own Venture Capital fund, Serena Ventures. Williams founded Serena Ventures in 2014 in efforts to alleviate the issue of underrepresented founders not gaining enough support, financial capital, and emotional resources to make their businesses come to life and succeed.
Serena Williams: The biggest lesson that I’ve learned, is that no matter who you are it takes a ton of work and time. Yesterday, I was listening to my husband talk about different business things and I learned a huge lesson that I could immediately start applying but in general, I think in business it’s key to understand that sometimes you might see something and it seems like it has happened overnight but it takes a lot of hard work and restless nights.
Williams: It’s really cool for me to be a Global Advisor because it’s important that companies are driven to make an impact and have good advisors. I’m going to be so presumptuous to think that I’m a good advisor but I feel like I have a lot of good advice to share given the experiences that I’ve had. I think it’s important to relate that experience on a worldwide level, things that I’ve been through, literally across the globe.
Williams: I started Serena Ventures because I wanted to invest in different companies, I wanted to be in the investment world. I was looking at people who invested in Apple and Facebook, and wondered how I would be able to do that. The more I started investing, I learned that so very few female-founded companies were getting investment dollars, and that changed my mission to focus on bringing awareness on that issue.
