Researchers are untangling the genetic code of the Covid-19 virus, in their race to track fast-moving variants. The process starts with a Covid-19 test
Some samples that test positive for the coronavirus in a laboratory are pulled aside and sent off for sequencing, a review of the virus’s genetic material that can take as little as a day or more than a week. The SARS-CoV-2 genome has about 30,000 individual building blocks to decode, compared with about three billion in the human genome.on hand or nearby. But often samples must be shipped elsewhere, which can take days.
A personal, guided tour to the best scoops and stories every day in The Wall Street Journal.Because sequencing is relatively expensive and time-consuming, laboratories sometimes wait to start until they have enough samples to fill up a machine, said Peter Iwen, director of the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory. Some sequencers can run a few dozen samples at a time, while others are capable of processing hundreds of samples at once.
