In 2019, PI sent five period-tracking apps a “data subject access requests”, similar to a Freedom of Information request, which under data protection law grants citizens the right to ask public and private companies for their own data. The responses were telling. So what should we do? The onus, Pirolot de Corbin believes, should be strictly on the companies “to provide a safe option for users”. This, she says, should include transparency as to who data is being shared with and for what purposes, as well as minimising data held, by storing it on local devices, not with the company itself.
