On July 8, 2017, I was standing with my sister Stevie in a massive crowd in Hyde Park, London, waiting for The Killers to take the stage. It was 86 degrees and broad daylight. Stevie and I laughed and joked while sipping on drinks. I grabbed the phone and stuck my hand up in the air with it, screaming that he’d taken photos of my vagina, and demanding to know why. We got into a scuffle; I slapped him and he grabbed me and shook me, and then I locked eyes with a couple of guys who told me to run. I tore through the crowd, pushing people out of the way. When I go to a venue I always make it a point to know where to find security and the exits. It’s something my boyfriend drilled into me.
These guys could take photos of my vagina up my skirt without my consent and the police and the law couldn’t help me, but me putting a picture of their faces online was a problem? I already knew there was a cultural problem with seeing women’s bodies as public property and their outfits as invitations for commentary. I knew we were living in a society that prioritized men’s careers and egos over women’s rights, but I’d never experienced a more ironic and frustrating example of the disparity.
