Man United midfielder Casemiro netted his fourth goal of the season in Tuesday night's 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace.
When it has come to rebuilding Manchester United's squad over the past 15 months, the decision-makers have spent the bulk of their time working on the midfield.
De Jong is a ball-playing specialist and was seen by Ten Hag as the ideal candidate to revolutionise United's midfield, along with Christian Eriksen, who was snapped up on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, becoming United's first midfield signing of the Ten Hag era. But after a disastrous start to the season, it became clear that the Reds needed a midfielder who specialised in the defensive side of the operation.
His ball-winning capabilities and ability to dictate games were two important traits that United had been missing for years. All the top sides had a defensive anchor that disrupted things in the middle. Casemiro quickly established himself as the destroyer-in-chief that United had been craving. He has scored three goals and claimed one assist in his last three games, meaning he is continuing to step up and lead by example, even in areas you would not usually associate him with doing so. However, he regularly found the net at Madrid, meaning his tally of 18 direct goal contributions in United colours so far should not be too great a surprise.
Declan Rice, though not quite as productive as Casemiro and Rodri so far this term, scoring only once in Arsenal colours so far, netted five goals and racked up four assists in his final season at West Ham United last term. Casemiro, Rodri and Rice are, through the eyes of most, the standout defensive-midfielders in the Premier League, each tasked with being their club's respective destroyer-in-chief.
