Douglas BrinkleyOn the afternoon of May 25, 1961, members of Congress assembled in a joint session at the U.S. Capitol to hear President John F. Kennedy’s highly anticipated special address on “Urgent National Needs.
” After describing the Soviets’ success in building powerful rockets and satellites, Kennedy astonished his audience, and the world, by tying his New Frontier agenda to a lunar mission: “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.”
