Long before I was a registered dietitian I was on vacation in Florida when I reached into the cookie tin and took out three cookies. I’ll just have three, that will be it, I told myself. Everyone else was at the beach, and I had stayed back to sneak a treat.

“Just eat and don’t think so hard about it,” my boyfriend at the time told me. I looked at him like he had three heads. Impossible, I thought. I sought help from my medical doctor and from a dietitian. I also confided in friends who shared their struggles around food with me, and all of these things helped a lot. There are so many more mental health resources today than there were back then. It was more of a secret thing that people didn’t like to talk about openly, and my awareness of professional support for these sorts of issues was really minimal.
