Basil Tuma explains his 'whirlwind' rise from life at one of Britain's elite boarding schools to the rough and tumble of League One
4 reasons the Lionesses' Olympic dream is unravelling with Team GB set to miss out on ParisBasil Tuma explains his ‘whirlwind’ rise from life at one of Britain’s elite boarding schools to the rough and tumble of League One
Sometimes he would leave lessons early, then leave training early to get back to Eton to finish his classes. The evenings were spent catching up on missed work, a little socialising if he had time, meetings with Eton Society – or “Pop”, as it’s known at the school – a select group of his peers in an exclusive club that counts former prime minister Boris Johnson, the Prince of Wales and Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as previous members.
Tuma had been captain of The Dragon’s football team and though Oxford United showed serious interest the timing wasn’t right with him starting at Eton. Nonetheless, clubs were taking notice, and a trial at Fulham turned into a schoolboy contract. However, nearing the scholarship years they were unsure if he would be offered a contract and it became clear that staying at Fulham would have meant leaving Eton, due to the travelling distance.
“I go over to talk to Paul Ince,” he recalls. “He said he was really impressed with me and that he thought I could have an impact in the first team and that he wanted me on the bench for the Championship game against Cardiff. Paul Ince was England captain – I was like ‘what’s going on?!’” “The joke I got was at Reading people would say you’re never here you’re always at Eton and at Eton I got people saying you’re never here you’re always at Reading.”

At the King's request, the fuel tanks were filled with 40 per cent sustainable aviation fuel. Over on Instagram, Charles and Camilla's social media team posted a very rare behind-the-scenes video of the duo travelling in the ministerial jet. Queen Camilla, 76, meanwhile, is seen reading a similar Filofax in a deep shade of blue. For the plane journey, King Charles looked his usual dapper self in a powder blue shirt and a pair of stone-hued chinos. He donned a lilac tie to smarten up his look and finished off his outfit with a pair of tortoiseshell reading glasses.Exuding sophistication, Camilla opted for a sleek navy outfit featuring a crisp white shirt, a cosy jumper and a tailored navy blazer."The King and Queen flew to Kenya today ahead of their State Visit, which begins tomorrow.
