had completely dominated the awards. A bit more shocking was the realization that Gwendoline Christie, GOT’s crusading Brienne of Tarth, scored her nomination by submitting her own materials.
Two of Christie’s other castmates, Alfie Allen and Carice van Houten, snagged Emmy nominations through self-submissions, as well. All in the drama category, Christie and Allen are up for best supporting actress and actor, while Houten is a candidate for the best guest actress. Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are up against Christie for best supporting actress, meaning Game of Thrones has a 66 percent chance of winning in the supporting actress category.
Game of Thrones had 29 other nominations, adding to the network’s 105 other nominations, making HBO the most-nominated network of the year. Though the Television Academy has no rules against the number of submissions allowed, HBO apparently chose to limit its number of entrants. This isn’t particularly unusual, but it is wildly uncommon for self-submitted entrants to actually receive nominations. It seems that $225 submission fee was worth it.
