for Selby Drummond, the head of fashion and beauty at Snapchat. The two met at a party in Positano a few years ago and immediately hit it off. “We connected in life, we connected one day, we connected out of the blue, and then we never disconnected!” Valli laughed.
Selby wore one of his looks to the Met Gala in 2018, and it was the best she’d ever felt. “People told me it was the best I’ve ever looked [too],” she said. From then on, she had an idea in the back of her head that if and when she were to get married, she would ask the designer if he might consider creating the dress. “It feels perfect that I’m wearing one of his dresses to my wedding,” she explained. “It’s about fun and joy and spontaneity and having fun in an authentic way.
While Selby didn’t know exactly how she wanted the dress to look at the onset, she came armed with inspirational imagery from Valli’s most recent couture show in Paris. She visited his atelier, tried a dress from the show on, and the pair went from there with him designing a gown with a silhouette befitting of what he refers to as “her superhero body.”
“Remember the front is extremely important; but remember, in weddings, the back is even more important than the front,” Valli emphasized as he and Selby tweaked the silhouette during the final fitting. “You always remember weddings from the back! I always do wedding dresses in a different way [than] other people do. I do wedding dresses as a party dress.” And what more could you want for one of life’s biggest parties? Said the designer: “I love to make people happy.
