How Germany and the United States see the world:

Two allied organizations committed to sustaining the transatlantic relationship cultivated after World War II, the American Council on Germany and the Atlantik-Bruecke, held their annual meeting in Berlin yesterday, and in some ways the most important participant was someone who wasn’t even in the room: U.S. President Donald Trump.

It was stunning to hear that these serious, pro-Atlanticist people would be putting the president of the United States in the company of this rogue’s gallery. But it was even more worrisome that such a prominent German leader would feel the need to say that the president really didn’t belong in that group at all. The whole discussion felt like an exercise in protesting too much.

Given the salience of the “climate emergency,” it perhaps is not surprising that the German Green party came in second in last week’s European parliament election. Some polls show the Greens coming in first if elections were called in the immediate future. Some are not happy about the lack of a more “social” dimension to the Greens’ platform, but it’s clear that the Greens are very popular among younger voters.
