The incredible photos from Hubble and James Webb are only beautiful thanks to an expert blending of art and science. Meet two of the talented editors that bring NASA's photos of the cosmos to life.

, and he specifically trained it to look for Webb-type stars, that distinctive six or eight-spiked pattern, to pull those stars out. You can take an image from Webb and remove all those stars, like when trying to look at a nebula. His tools are based on neural net algorithms. I think that’s a perfect candidate for a tool that could be used for de-banding. I haven’t raised that issue with Russ yet, but I intend to at some point. I know he’s a very busy guy.

The Webb team released this image of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex to celebrate Webb’s first birthday. The full-size image is a whopping 153-megapixels and should absolutely be downloaded for pixel-peeping. | Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Klaus Pontoppidan / Image processing: Alyssa Pagan This zoomed-in image shows Uranus as seen by NIRCam. The blue hue results from combining data from two filters, F140M and F300M, which are shown as blue and orange, respectively. | Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI / Image processing: Joseph DePasquale

The Pillars of Creation are shown in spectacular color in this NIRCam image. | Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI / Image processing: Joseph DePasquale , Anton M. Koekemoer , Alyssa Pagan Webb celebrated its first birthday earlier this month “It was just really cool to have this intensely focused period of about six weeks where we all worked really closely together to develop the program, imagery, writing, alt text, and how it was all going to be displayed. All this stuff was happening at the same time for six weeks. It’s very unusual compared to the day-to-day operations of the telescope. It was an amazing experience that I will hold onto forever,” he adds.

This Hubble image processed by Pagan shows the lensed star Earendel. The star, indicated with an arrow, is distorted because of a massive galaxy cluster in the intervening space. This is gravitational lensing. Knowing the distance between galaxies and stars is critical for astronomy, and DePasquale thinks that further study of TRGB stars will help with more accurate distance measurements.
