'A buzzard is a scavenger and we’re trying to scavenge the best of Cleveland and put it together on a radio station,” music director/disc jockey Denny Sanders told an artist nearly 50 years ago.
Hours before, Gorman and music director/disc jockey Denny Sanders -- two key figures who would play a key role in turning WMMS from an obscure FM station to an industry influencer and Cleveland treasure -- racked their brains about creating a station mascot.
“You’re faced with this negativity day and night about Cleveland,” Gorman said. “Everybody was telling me Cleveland was dying. Meanwhile, I see Cleveland from a different light. It has a great park system. It’s a great rock ‘n’ roll town. It’s got potential.” The day after driving home in the sleet and snow, Gorman told Sanders about the buzzard mascot when the mail was delivered to WMMS, which at the time was located on Euclid Avenue and E. 55th in the building that now houses the Cleveland Agora.
An avid WMMS listener who also looked like the quintessential fan , Helton on a whim mailed a complaint letter to the station. “He said, ‘A buzzard is a scavenger and we’re trying to scavenge the best of Cleveland and put it together on a radio station.’” “All I could think about is old Buzz Buzzard from the Walter Lantz cartoons, but that’s not what I used as a reference. I remembered a buzzard’s long, skinny neck from biology books in high school. So I went home and drew it. That’s how it came out.”“It was a tough bird for a tough city,” Sanders said. “David’s rendition was also friendly and smiling. It showed the two sides of Cleveland....tough but friendly.
“It forced the issue and finally convinced corporate we should do a bumper sticker with the Buzzard on it. That came out late spring and early summer of 1974. A number of things fell into place that made the Buzzard work.”
