The Cowboys signed Land due to his versatility to play inside linebacker and defensive end. He’s a perfect fit for defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s defense, and his ability to play special teams for John Fassel also is a benefit.
Land, a defensive end in college, emerged as a talented player in the 2021 season. He was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and given the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive player in FCS. He was also a first-team All-American. He had 19 sacks and 25 ½ tackles for loss, along with 43 tackles in 12 starts.
Bell’s signing, plus the scouts saying Land needed to remain in the SWAC, were major influences in Land’s decision to not transfer. “I’ve had my eye on him for a quite some time,” Quinn said. “I first saw him looking at Bell from a year ago and he had a fantastic junior year, Isaiah did, sacks and really lit it up. Who is this guy? I saw Bell in that and I kept up with him throughout the time even with Markquese. I remember calling Markquese from the combine and ‘Hey Isaiah ran well. He’s a dawg.
