Here's how Covid affected employee perks and what they will look like post-pandemic:
Businesses are substituting employee perks like free in-office lunches and stocked fridges for subscriptions to mental health apps, working from home stipends and now, even Peloton memberships. The exercise equipment company recently launched a corporate wellness program that allows employers to offer workers subsidized access to Peloton’s digital fitness membership, its cycles and treadmills.
Dawn Fay, senior district president at recruiting firm Robert Half, agrees with that sentiment. “There are some things that are forever changed. The remote working, hybrid model type situation is going to be one of them,” she says. “I don’t know that many companies are going to go back to their offices Monday through Friday. That shift alone will continue to shift things.”
Going forward, Fay says companies may decide to bring in onsite individuals or organizations to help with employees’ mental health and well-being. While many companies have provided access to mental health apps like Calm and Talkspace out of necessity due to the widespread stress and isolation caused by the pandemic, Fay says having an in-person resource adds more of a personal touch than tech ever could.
In addition to stipends, Pringle is seeing employers increase vacation time and paid time off for workers. Some 22% of employers are enhancing their vacation or PTO policies, according to a recent SHRM survey. Pringle says that employers are being more flexible with the days that workers take off and observe holidays.
When employees are content, that shows in their work and interactions. “There’s a saying, ‘Happy employees are productive employees.’ That tends to be the case, if people feel good and supported about their organization, they tend to be happy in their jobs,” Fay says. “They're not focusing time and energy on complaining and griping and trying to get things changed. Instead, they’re focused on doing their job and serving their customers.
