A conversation with a woman who studied coding in 1980 and a current female student in coding uncovers some good news—and bad—about the field.

that the programming community has a serious diversity problem, improving gender diversity in coding is clearly imperative. And this starts with education.

Women only earn 18% of computer science bachelor's degrees in the United States, and many efforts try to get girls interested from a young age. How has studying computer science changed in the past three decades, and are we getting closer to better gender representation? I interviewed two women—Anna who studied computer science in the 1980s, and Josette Grinslade who is still in school—in the U.S. for their experiences to consider how much has actually changed.

To start with some good news, physical barriers to coding have dissipated. In the 1980s, when one still needed mainframe computers for enough processing power, “the only place where I could access the 24-hour computer was in the boys’ dorm. So I had to do my homework either in regular lab hours, or in a boys’ dorm after hours which posed all kinds of challenges,” says Anna.
