Members of 12 Bay Area tribes discuss the impact of climate change on their longstanding relationships with the land
A new de Young Museum exhibit highlights the diverse tribal history of the Bay Area's Indigenous people, and the impact of climate change on their relationships with the land.
"I was really blessed to be able to connect with various different groups in the south side," the photographer behind the exhibit, Bassendine, told The Examiner. "The difference is a collective group coming together that have never done so before, putting old tribal differences aside, and working on something that's so important to them — which is connection to land," she said, adding that local tribes"feel they have a responsibility" to address climate change"as the stewards of the land."

During Saturday's launch of the exhibit, the de Young hosted cultural demonstrations and a panel discussion on land access. A Nov. 4 event will include a panel discussion on rematriation, or the giving of land back to Indigenous people.
