Here's how Clara Holmes became an adaptive fashion style star.

Clara Holmes is a little flustered. When we spoke, the British model and lifestyle content creator has recently returned from a vacation in Tenerife, a scenic Spanish island. Shortly before that, she embarked on a work trip that involved sailing around the Mediterranean Sea. “It’s been manic,” Holmes says of returning home to an email inbox full of requests, castings calls, and press queries.

Still, Holmes is somewhat accustomed to the competing demands. She has spent the past six years carefully building a popular and uplifting brand centered around going places. Holmes, who is based in London, documents her adventures for over 34,000 followers on her Instagram page,. She posts sun-lit photos and videos of her dancing at the popular Notting Hill Carnival, showing off a new set of hot-pink heels, and relaxing on the beach in Jamaica.

But her content goes far deeper than pumping out enviable visions of travel and fun. Holmes is a wheelchair user, and she hopes her content—and life—inspires others who also use wheelchairs to pursue their best lives. “Someone who is disabled might be thinking, ‘I don’t really go to those places.’ Because either they might not feel welcomed [there] or they might not have access,” she says. Her goal is to change that.

last year, worked for Tommy Adaptive , and fronted ad campaigns for lingerie brand Curvy Kate. Holmes admits working in the modeling industry—which can be notoriously competitive for able-bodied models—can be even harder as a disabled, Black woman. But Holmes has forged a unique path for herself. “I’ve had both sides,” she says. “Either they’re looking for a disabled model or, sometimes, they’re looking for a Black model but I just happened to be disabled.

When she became a wheelchair user as an adult, Holmes had to look within and find inner confidence and strength. “When I was younger, I tried to be a model,” she says, speaking of when she did not use a wheelchair. “I went around to all the agencies and I got nothing.” The experience left her feeling disheartened. “But there was always a desire deep down inside that I hoped one day that would change,” she says. “Becoming disabled, you realize a lot of things. What you know is no longer fact.
